The Dàoist knows that the term Dào is written in its original Chinese by combining the symbols for Eye and Walk. To live is to move, to move is to journey, and to journey is to make a path. Whether we see a path ahead or fail to hold to the path we propose for ourselves – we always make a path. Necessarily. The Dàoist knows that the Way of path-going and path-making is what is important; not where we go but how we go. One important ingredient to the How of the Way of going our way is to Look. Remember that eye symbol? Look as we live; look as we go. Look for teachers and teachings. Listen for teachers and teachings. Listen to the stones in our way, listen to our bones as we make our way. In time, if we’ve listened and learned, the paths we’ve walked may be followed by others who follow.
This special series, originated for the Old Oak School of the Dao in California invites us to walk in with our Inner Nature within the grandeur of the Big Nature. It is not a hike and not a race.
To find our (unmarked) Path along the (marked) path we will explore some of the natural possibilities to practice Qi Gong found on our way. We may breathe into our bones and lift stones. We may listen to our cells and rearrange seashells. We may clamber and kick, we may expand our worldview by squinting at a chrysalis. There are many games and exercises to be found where the sea meets the sand. A shaman is open to them.
I don’t plan any difficult hikes.
